  • Using Breeding To Untangle The Potential of a Horses Racing Ability.

An example of my notes on the Stella Artois Maiden 1300m at Hastings 27 Feb. 2019. Shown is the detail on possible distance preferences as well as a Genetic Potential Rating (GPR). This is based upon the race history and breeding of the 6 ancestors that make up the parents and grandparents of the horse in question. In my study so far, a rating of 30+ is a bottom line figure pointing to whether a horse may have inherited racing ability. No one figure makes a horse better than another, this is just potential racing ability.

Rekohu Diva has a pedigree that is lacking in any obvious racing ability at GPR 22.0. Her sire was unraced and her dam is unproven. Away Cruising has a high GPR 97.7, consistent with good stakes winners. Either could run to their GPR or they could run below it.

Foggy Lyttle. By successful sire Per Incanto out of Tick Tock Time. Full brother to Its Time For Magic (LW). Miler out to 2000m. Good female line. Leader or on pace. GPR 45.8

Visconti. By successful sire Reward For Effort out of successful broodmare My Southern Bell. Visconti is a half brother to G3 winner, G2 placed Flying Tristram. 1600-2400m. Good female line, #18 Belle Family. GPR 52.1

Iron Eagle By champion sire Darci Brahma out of successful broodmare Flying Firebird. Good female line. She is the dam of G2 winner, G1 placed Smoulder and of G3 placed Flaming. Can race in or near lead, expected to be a little short distance wise. Looking for a mile or more. GPR 67.1

Magic Incanto. By Per Incanto out of Magic Daze. Good female line. Needs more ground, a mile and beyond. Expected to sit around midfield, may finish on but too short. GPR 53.2

Rekohu Diva By unraced and new sire Playmaker out of unproven mare La Cat. Female line good further back but dam unknown quantity and granddam disappointing. Loaded with speed and 1200m or so her go. Place chance at best. GPR 22.0 (very low).

Sheer Elegance by Civics who has started well as a sire out of good broodmare Azurebelle, from the #18 Belle Family. Best distance to 1600m, perhaps 2000m. Will probably sit off the pace, perhaps middlefield. Should be finishing on. #18 Belle Family. GPR 43.8

Le Cailloux by the poorly performed sire Cape Blanco out of successful broodmare Lithe. Damline average. Dam of stakes winner Vikja King. Middle distance is her go. May run on the pace from her draw, expected to fade. GPR 55.6

Away Cruising by Darci Brahma out of brilliant racemare Seachange. Damline strong. Needs at least 1600m with a middle distance her go. May lead from the draw, looking for more ground but expect a good run. GPR 97.7 (very high).

Allabouteve is by unsuccessful sire Shocking out of unproven mare Our Famous Eve. Female line good. Middle distance will be her go. Expect her to settle midfield or thereabouts. GPR 43.6

Pinched by champion sire Pins out of unproven mare Stole. Granddam disappointing. Speed is her go and expect a good run first up. GPR 35.9

Genetics is only responsible for at most 30% of a horses ability, trainer and environment are also important and can stifle or empower a horses ability.
